More liberalized goods, services trade for Philippines in annual METI review

THE PHILIPPINES must further liberalize trade in goods and services if it wants to enjoy the full economic benefits of free trade, said the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI).

While current tariff rates and foreign ownership rules abide by World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements on multilateral trade, the Philippines can broaden its commitments to ease barriers for industrial goods and select service sectors, according to Japan’s annual review of its trade relations released early last week.
